Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, and it is already on sale. If you’re holding an iPhone 17 Pro Max, however, the real question is whether this year’s changes justify the jump. This guide therefore compares both phones side by side using Apple’s confirmed details.
Short answer: the upgrade makes sense if you care about camera control, battery life, and sustained performance. On the other hand, if you’re happy with your 17 Pro Max, nothing here is urgent, because Apple’s announcement focuses on camera, battery and chip rather than a redesign.

Release Date and Availability
The iPhone 17 Pro Max was announced on September 9, 2025 and launched on September 19, 2025. Similarly, the iPhone 18 Pro Max was announced on September 9, 2026, with pre-orders from September 12 and availability from September 18. In addition, Apple lists a further 20 countries and regions receiving it from September 25.
Price: What Changed

Design and Colors
The iPhone 17 Pro Max came in Silver, Cosmic Orange, and Deep Blue. In contrast, the iPhone 18 Pro Max comes in Black, Silver, Glacier, and a new Burgundy. Apple’s announcement does not highlight weight or size changes, so check Apple’s tech specs page if a slim profile matters to you.
Display and Dynamic Island
The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch OLED display with a variable 1-120Hz refresh rate and up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. On the 18 Pro Max, the headline display change is a smaller, redesigned Dynamic Island that can show up to three Live Activities at once. Face ID, meanwhile, still works as before.
Performance: A19 Pro vs A20 Pro
The 17 Pro Max runs on the A19 Pro, whereas the 18 Pro Max moves to the A20 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer process. According to Apple, the new chip brings:
- a new 6-core CPU with 50% more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro
- a 7-core GPU that is up to 40% faster than A19 Pro
- a Dual 16-core Neural Engine for on-device AI, with double the AI processing power of A19 Pro
- a next-generation vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the 17 Pro’s, giving up to 40% better sustained performance
In addition, both new Pro models include Apple’s N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The new lineup also introduces the C2 modem, which Apple says uploads faster than the C1X while using 15% less energy.
Camera: Variable Aperture Is the Big Change
The 17 Pro Max already has a strong triple 48MP Fusion camera system. Even so, the 18 Pro Max upgrades the 48MP Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture, a first for iPhone. Six blades move between four aperture settings, so the lens can open up to ƒ/1.48 for low light or narrow to ƒ/4 to keep more of a group photo sharp. Moreover, a new sensor and computational imaging pipeline add more detail.
Other camera additions include:
- Pro controls in the Camera app for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a histogram
- Photographic Styles with new texture and grain controls
- Cinematic effects applied after shooting, for video up to 60 fps
- 4K Dolby Vision HDR Time-lapse
- Apple Reference Image, an opt-in mode that proves a photo hasn’t been edited
Battery Life and Charging
The 17 Pro Max offers up to 39 hours of video playback. By comparison, Apple rates the 18 Pro Max for up to 45 hours on eSIM-only models, which it calls the largest battery life increase ever on an iPhone. However, physical-SIM versions get about two hours less, because the eSIM-only models use the freed-up SIM space for a larger battery. Note that Apple does not publish battery capacity in mAh.
As for charging, five minutes of wired charging gives the 18 Pro Max around seven hours of video playback, according to Apple. Software: iOS 27 and Siri AI
The 18 Pro Max ships with iOS 27, Apple Intelligence, and Siri AI, a rebuilt Siri that Apple says is more personal and conversational. For now, Siri AI is rolling out in beta, English first, with more languages planned for October. Also, it is not available in the EU at launch.
